They do these through collaborative research, partnerships, and the strengthening of the national agricultural research and extension systems, or NARES, of the countries we work in.

C4 Rice Project

C4 Rice project

The C4 Rice project aims to convert the photosynthetic system in rice to the more efficient, supercharged C4 one used by maize, which would increase rice yields while using scarce resources (land, water, fertilizer) more effectively.

Cassava Source-Sink project

The Cassava Source-Sink (CASS) project brings together computer scientists, plant scientists and breeders, to combine progress in each field with the common goal to improve plant productivity and to secure future food supply for a growing world population.

Durable Rust Wheat

Durable Rust Resistance in Wheat project

The project seeks to mitigate rust threats through coordinated activities that will replace susceptible varieties with durably resistant varieties, created by accelerated multilateral plant breeding and delivered through optimized developing country seed sectors. The project also aims to harness recent advances in genomics to introduce non-host resistance (immunity) into wheat.

Enabling Nutrient Symbioses in Agriculture (ENSA) project

The ENSA project is using knowledge of how peas form a nitrogen-fixing symbiosis to explore the ambitious goal of transferring this capability to cereals, as an environmentally-sustainable approach for small farmers in sub-Saharan Africa to increase maize yields.

Golden Rice

Golden Rice project

The Golden Rice project is developing rice that has been genetically engineered to produce and accumulate β-carotene in the grain. This gives the grains a golden color, as opposed to regular white rice, which is practically devoid of carotenoids. When the rice is consumed, the β-carotene is either stored in the fatty tissues of the body or converted into vitamin A. This project aims to contribute to improving the health of millions of people suffering from micronutrient deficiency.

Next Generation Cassava Breeding (NEXTGEN Cassava) project

The NEXTGEN Cassava project aims to significantly increase the rate of genetic improvement in cassava breeding and unlock the full potential of cassava, a staple crop central to food security and livelihoods across Africa.

Maize

Water Efficient Maize for Africa (WEMA) project

The goal of the WEMA Project is to enhance food security in sub-Saharan Africa through developing and deploying drought-tolerant maize royalty-free to the smallholder farmers. Insect-protection is complementary to the efforts of developing more drought-tolerant maize varieties and will also be available royalty-free. This increased yield stability has the potential to help reduce hunger and improve the livelihood of millions of Africans.
