Maxim Kapralov is a Lecturer at the Liverpool John Moores University. He received his BS and MS in Biology at the Ural Federal University and Ph.D. at the Russian Academy of Sciences. He published twenty research papers in PNAS, Molecular Biology and Evolution and other journals. Maxim studies variation in genes encoding the key photosynthetic enzyme, Rubisco, and relates it to biochemical, ecological and physiological variation in plants. This approach results in candidate amino acid replacements that could change Rubisco kinetics. Maxim is introducing predicted amino acid replacements in planta and assessing kinetics of modified Rubiscos. Finding Rubisco catalytic switches is the first step for its customized improvement in crops.
