Charles Pignon was a graduate student in the lab of Steve Long at the University of Illinois. During his doctoral studies, he identified potential to enhance crop photosynthesis by studying C4 photosynthesis in leaves. He then became a postdoctoral researcher in the lab of Andrew Leakey, where he contributed towards developing crops with improved water-use efficiency. Charles has since gone on to become a plant physiologist for Benson Hill.
